Common mistakes that we do while writing laboratory reports

5/5 - (1 vote)

10. Writing the report in the exact order of its presentation

It is important for us to understand the whole experiment before writing the report. When we start writing a lab report we have to write a brief introduction and objective of the study. Then the methods with complete materials required should be presented. The results followed by discussion and conclusion cover all the sections serially. Apart from all the above major mistakes that we make while preparing a lab report some other small mistakes are

    1. Grammar and spelling mistakes.
    2. No proofreading after a long gap of writing the lab report
    3. Writing report using first person like I, We etc.
    4. Using an abbreviation without mentioning the full form anywhere.
    5. Use of contractions in formal writing.
    6. Use of extreme adjectives like very, highly etc.
    7. Writing report like a conversation instead of scientific report.
    8. Not labeling/writing the titles for the tables and figures properly.
    9. Mistakes in writing formulas (without subscript) and nomenclatures of any compound, name of the animal, organism or plant species.
    10. Not writing a zero before a decimal point if no other preceding number (e.g., writing .45 is wrong. We should write 0.45.)
    11. Not keeping space within number and units (1mg is incorrect. 1 mg is correct.)
    12. Not providing references or incomplete form for methods.

So, we tried to cover the common mistakes which could be avoided while writing the report of the laboratory experiment. Happy experimenting!
