Differential Media for Different Microorganisms

The process by which microorganisms are propagated for growing by offering them the required environmental conditions is called cultivation of microorganisms. Differential media are used for isolation or identification of some particular organisms. It is mainly used for differentiating some closely related microorganisms or various groups of organisms.

It is accomplished because of the presence of certain chemicals in the media which will make the organisms to produce the required changes or the growth patterns and this is used for that particular microorganism’s identification or differentiation. A large number of differential media are being utilized in several sectors like medical, pollution laboratories, diagnostic centres, food laboratories.

Differential media consist of a certain compound that facilitates visual distinguishing of a certain group of microorganisms either by the colony appearance or because of the appearance of the surrounding media. The macroscopic differentiation is carried out by observing the capability of the bacteria to accomplish certain biochemical processes. Now, let’s have a look at some of the differential media used for cultivation of certain microorganisms.
