Food Science: An Overview

Food science is the branch of science dealing with the production and processing of food as well as food products. It also deals with harvesting to cooking of food and management. This branch also covers the processing of the food/food materials, preservation, labelling, quality check and distribution.

As reported by one website, food and grocery market of India is the sixth largest in the world constitutes of 65% of total retail market in India. The opportunities for food technology or food science degree holders are increasing day by day with the growth of these industries.

There are many colleges in India or abroad, offering various courses of food science/technology from undergraduate to graduation level or doctorate program. Like other science subjects, the eligibility criteria to pursue the courses are similar.

Science students with physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and home science with 50-60% marks are required to join the undergraduate courses like Bachelor of science in Food Science or food technology (B.Sc. Food science or Technology), depending upon the criteria of the organization/university.

Similarly, to pursue a course at post graduate level, i.e., Master of science in Food Science or food technology (M. Sc. Food science or Technology), the candidate must have any bachelor degree of science subjects (physics, chemistry and biology subjects) or B.Sc./B.Tech. in food science subjects.
