Phenylethyl Alchohol Agar
Phenylethyl alchohol (PEA) agar is a differential medium that inhibits the growth of gram negative microorganisms. It inhibits the growth y disturbing the structure of the lipid in the membrane of the bacteria and also blocking protein synthesis thereby leading to very poor growth of the organisms in the media. The growth of the medium is either stunted or is completely stopped.
Blood Agar for Different Microorganisms
Blood agar is one of the differential media with various differential properties that causes haemolysis. Haemolysis is a process by which erythrocytes are destructed and the range to which it is destroyed can be known by the effects of the haemolytic enzymes on the medium cells. Total breakdown of RBCs is called beta haemolysis and is identified by clearing around the colonies forming haemolysin. Partial destroy forms a green-brown colour on the medium and is called alpha haemolysis. Gamma haemolysis is no destruction to RBCs and no alteration in the media.
