What are the Fellowship Schemes for Women Researchers in India?

Evidences have now proved that gender included political system results good policies for girls and woman. More provisions should be made to enhance the presence of women in developing technology and innovations. If more and more women will be included in science and technological sector then definitely, an enhanced productivity will be resulted. Women will get exposed to high profile jobs, high benefits for female customers of technology and their requirements.

Present day, institutions that are supporting researchers by providing funds should focus on decreasing the existing gender gap. It is possible by either making some financial grants or by awarding policies that will help women in competing on equal footing as researchers. Fellowships and scholarship on national and global level will assist in enhancing opportunities for female researchers keeping interest in doing research and making their contribution to the developing technology. Fellowship means financial support for the specific person that is given either as a reward for achieving something or is awarded to encourage for boosting his/her performance.

There are large number of women in our society who are not being able to continue their research career because of issues like lack of funds, family related problems and many other problems. In order to solve issues faced by women researchers and to provide them various platforms in research and help them to explore their capabilities in innovation, Government of India has initiated several schemes to make sure that women candidates can easily complete their research works and can serve the society along with the country in the field of research.

  1. University Grants Commission Award

University Grants Commission (UGC) Award is a postdoctoral fellowship for women candidates for speeding up the talented instincts of those unemployed women candidates having PhD degree in their subject and wish to carry out further studies and research. The sole objective of this award is to offer an opportunity to women candidates for carrying out further studies in sectors like science, technology, social sciences etc in various Indian universities and Colleges identified under section (2). To get this fellowship candidate should meet a few eligibility conditions.

Eligibility:

  • The candidate must possess a doctorate degree in the required subject mostly with a published research work supporting degree.
  • 55% mark at UG level and 60% mark at PG level for General/Open category.
  • For reserved candidates 50% mark at UG level and 55% at Pg level.
  • The upper age limit is 55 years for general category students while 60 years for reserved category candidates as on 1st July of the year of application.

The number of seats available is 100 per year with a maximum tenure of 5 years with no provision of extension.

Fellowship amount: Rs. 38,800/- per month to Rs. 46,500/- per month. After two years contingency Rs. 50,000/- per annum for five years Escorts/Readers Rs. 2000/- p.m. (fixed) in cases of person with a disability.

2) Department of Biotechnology Award

Department of Biotechnology (DBT) is Biotechnology Career Advancement and Re-orientation (Bio-CARe) programme for women scientists. It was introduced to increase women participation in the field of biotechnology research. Its objective was to build more capacities in universities for employing women scientist fulltime. The candidate has to select a specific area of research and then make a project proposal.

Eligibility:

  • The candidate must possess a doctorate degree in the required subject mostly with a published research work supporting degree.
  • 55% mark at UG level and 60% mark at PG level for General/Open category.
  • For reserved candidates 50% mark at UG level and 55% at Pg level.
  • The upper age limit is 55 years for general category students while 60 years for reserved category candidates as on 1st July of the year of application.

3) Science Engineering Research Board Award

Science Engineering Research Board (SERB) is awarded to those eligible women scientist below the age of 40 years with recognition from any national academics like Young Scientist Medal, Young Associate etc. They will be given a research grant of Rs. 5 lakhs per total period of 3 years. Those women have received this award much before are not eligible.

4) Department of Health Research

Department of Health Research (DHR), ICMR is another specific programme for women. In this scheme, either short/long term training is provided that is followed by fellowship especially for those who have taken a break in their career but posses a good aptitude for doing research in some of the emerging areas.
