How to become an epidemiologist?

An individual who wants to become an epidemiologist must meet the eligibility criteria and possess the required skillset.

Eligibility

You must have passed class 12 or senior secondary examination with a minimum of 50% marks in subjects that includes English, physics, chemistry, and Biology.

After completing 10+2 with physics, chemistry, and biology, students can be admitted to Bachelor’s degree programs, i.e., B.Sc. In epidemiology or Bachelor degree in Public Health from a recognized college or university.

Masters degree

After completing of Bachelor’s degree, you will get several opportunities to make a career.

After completing Bachelors degree, you can start working in an entry-level position. Or you can pursue a masters degree after specific years of work.

Or you can also resume your studies without making any gap in your academics. After completion of a master’s degree, you can start working.

To pursue career in this field, the candidate must have masters in Epidemiology or Public Health or a PhD degree.

Excluding the above, someone having medical degree (MBBS/BDS) or paramedical like pharmacy, nursing or allied sciences like sociology, social work, nutrition with bachelors or masters is also eligible for this career.

Entrance examination

There are many universities as well as colleges that conduct entrance exams for offering admissions. Depending on the candidate’s performance, admission is provided.

  • JIPMER-EE: Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research Entrance Examination
  • NEET UG: National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate)
  • SCTIMST-EE: Sree Chitra Tribunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology Entrance Examination
  • AMU CAT: Aligarh Muslim University Common Admission Test
