BACKGROUND

Proteins are biological macromolecules which play diverse functional role starting from structural (collagen, elastin etc.), immune system molecules (antibody), catalyst (enzymes), oxygen transport (haemoglobin), locomotion (actin/myosin of muscle), poison (venom) and many more.1

Identification of protein molecules is important in various contexts, identification of certain category of antibody in body specifically identifies the type of infection, and similarly presence of proteins in urine identifies the problem associated with abnormal physiology. Here we will discuss the basic method to identify presence of protein in a sample.

REQUIREMENTS

Sample: Egg white, Milk, Blood Plasma etc.

Apparatus: Test tube/Micro centrifuge tube (MCT),

Materials: Biuret reagent2

PROCEDURE

Collect a test tube, add 2 ml of Biuret reagent and mix it well.

CONCLUSION

If the colour of the sample changes to pink-purple, it indicates presence of protein.
