BACKGROUND

The ECG helps in measuring the electrical activity of the heart by placing the electrodes on the skin. These electrodes detect the electrical charges formed by the heart muscles during repolarization and depolarization of the heart. The convential 12-lead ECG, the electrodes are placed on the limbs and surface of the heart.1

The aim of the experiment is recording and analysis of 12 lead electrocardiograms and to measure the mean electrical axis of heart.

REQUIREMENTS

Subjects:    Human

Apparatus: Electrocardiogram

[ps2id id=’procedure’ target=”/]

PROCEDURE

The subject is asked to lie down. The subject is asked to remove socks to expose the ankle and remove the upper clothing to expose the chest. The electrodes are placed in the following order –V1-4th intercostal space (right), V2- 4th intercostal space (left), V3-midway between V2 and V4, V4-5th intercostal space, V5- left anterior axillary line, V6-Left mid axillary line. The limb electrodes are placed in this order –Red-right arm, Yellow-left arm, Green –left leg, Black-Right leg. The ECG machine is turned on, with the paper loaded. Check all the electrodes and its placement. Ask the subject not to speak during the recording. Start to record the trace. Switch off the electrodes once the trace is complete. Detach the leads from electrodes and also remove the electrodes. Ask the patient to get dressed and label the recording with the subject’s name and document the findings.2

CONCLUSION

The recording of ECG is helpful in diagnosis of Cardiac arrhythmia, myocardial ischemia and infarction, drug effects, toxicity, pericarditis and chamber hypertrophy.3
