Preparation and standardization of ceric ammonium sulphate

Rate this post

BACKGROUND

It is a red-ox titration. Ceric ammonium sulphate solution is titrated with arsenic trioxide (primary standard) in presence of sulfuric and osmic acid utilizing the ferroin sulphate as indicator. End point is visually detected by change in color from pink to very pale blue.1

REQUIREMENTS

Chemicals:

        Ceric ammonium sulphate

        Sulfuric acid

        Sodium hydroxide

        Osmic acid

        Ferrous sulfate

        1,10-phenanthroline hydrochloride

        Ferroin sulfate

Apparatus:

        Beakers

        Volumetric flask

        Conical flask

        Burette

        Pipette

PROCEDURE

Preparation of Ceric Ammonium Sulphate

Dissolve around 65 g of ceric ammonium sulphate in a mixture of 30 ml of sulfuric acid and 500 ml of water, with gentle heating. Filter after cooling the solution and dilute up to 1000 ml with water.

Preparation of Sodium hydroxide solutio

Weigh around 8 g of sodium hydroxide accurately and dilute up to 100 ml with distilled water.

Preparation of Sulfuric acid

Dilute 57 ml of sulfuric acid up to 1000 ml with distilled water.

Osmic acid solution

Dissolve 1 g of osmic acid was dissolved in 100 ml of distilled water.

Ferroin Sulphate Solution

Transfer 0.7 g of ferrous sulfate and 1,10-phenanthroline hydrochloride in to a 100 ml volumetric flask containing 70 ml distilled water, shaken and finally diluted to 100 ml.

Standardization of Ceric Ammonium Sulfate

Transfer 0.2 g of arsenic trioxide dried at 105°C for 1 h into a 500 ml conical flask. Rinse the inner wall of the flask with 25 ml of 8% w/v sodium hydroxide solution.

Swirl and dissolve the contents in 100 ml water. Add 30 ml of dilute sulfuric acid, 0.15 ml of osmic acid solution, 0.1 ml of ferroin sulfate. Titrate with ceric ammonium sulfate solution until pink color changed to pale blue color. Each ml of 0.1 M ceric ammonium sulfate = 0.004946g of As2O3.

CONCLUSION

From the above experiment it is evident that ceric ammonium sulfate can be effectively standardized by using primary standard arsenic trioxide. After performing the calculations, strength of the prepared ceric ammonium sulfate solution was found to be……..M.
