BACKGROUND

Coloponium, yellow resin, Rosin, these re the synonym of colophony. The biological source is Pinus maritime, Pinus pinaster, Pinus massoniana belongs to family Pinaceae. Mainly found in India, Pakistan, Northern Europe, and North America. It is having pale yellow to yellowish brown colour, faint odour, and glossy appearance. The active chemical constituent is abietic acid, pimaric acid etc.1

Aim: Aim of the experiment is to carry out different chemical test to analyze the crude drug of Colophony.

PROCEDURE

Chemical test

0.1 gm of powdered drug sample (colophony) is dissolved in 10 ml of acetic acid and one drop of sulphuric acid (concentrated) is added in a dry test tube. It is observed that a purple colour is converted in to violet colour.2

An alcoholic solution of colophony is acidic to litmus which turns the blue colour litmus to red colour.2

Petroleum ether solution of powdered colophony is taken. Dilute solution of cupper acetate is shaken (it should be the 2 times more volume of Petroleum ether solution of powdered colophony) with the sample. The colour is changed to emerld-green colour, due to the formation of cupper salt of abietic acid.2

Sufficient water is added to the solution of colophony (alcoholic). Due to the presence of active constituent the solution convert in to milky white.2

CONCLUSION

Rom the above chemical test it is concluded that the supplied specimen is Colophony. It is used in the preparation of ointment (stiffing agent), manufacturing of varnishes, disinfectant liquids, rosin oil, floor covering. it has cardio vascular activity, antimicrobial effect, surfactant properties.
