Determination of Strength-Duration Curve in Frog’s Nerve and Muscle

BACKGROUND

G. Weiss discovered the strength –duration curve in 1901. The strength duration curve is a graph plotted between electrical stimuli for different intensities and the time recorded by each stimulus to receive the response.1 This curve indicates the strength of various impulses required to produce the muscle contraction.

PROCEDURE

The frog to be fully supported and in adequate light. The electrodes are placed usually on the midline of the body or on the origin of the muscle group. The active electrode is placed on fleshy part of the muscle. The current is passed through the electrode using the longest stimulation and it is increased till the muscle contraction is achieved. The minimal contraction is used, the electrode being placed at the same point throughout the test.1

CONCLUSION

The strength-duration curve helps in knowing if the stimulated muscle is innervated, denervated or partially denervated.
