Determination of specific surface area

5/5 - (1 vote)

BACKGROUND

Surface area

The surface area of the powder can be calculated by using particle size data. This specific surface area may be defined as the surface area per unit weight (SW), or per unit volume (SV). The particle having large surface area are good absorbent for solid and gases. The diameter measured by this method is surface diameter.1-3

Aim: To determine specific surface area of talc by adsorption method.

REQUIREMENTS

Chemical:

  • Distilled water,
  • Talc,
  • Stearic acid,
  • 0.1N NaOH
  • Phenolphthalein

Apparatus

  • Electronic balance,
  • Conical flask,
  • Burette,
  • Pipette

PROCEDURE

100 ml of 1.0% stearic acid solution was prepared in neutralized methanol. Around 5 g of talc was accurately weighed and taken in a stoppered conical flask. 50 ml of 1.0% stearic acid in neutralized methanol was added to the conical flask containing talc.

The mixture was shaken for 1 hr and filtered through filter.N10 ml of filtrate was pipette out and titrated against 0.1 N NaOH solutions.
