BACKGROUND
Glident Efficiency
Aim: To study the effect of glident on angle of repose and to determine glident efficiency from flow rate.
Angle of repose is defined as the maximum angle possible between the surface area of the pile of powder and horizontal plane. The angle of repose is given by
(o) = tan-1 h/r
Where, h = height of pile
r = radius of the base of the pile
Bulk density is defined as the ratio of weight of powder to the bulk volume is the volume occupied by certain weight of powder when gently poured into the measuring cylinder.
Bulk density = weight / bulk volume
Tapped density is the ratio of weight of powder to the tapped volume and Tapped volume is the volume occupied by certain weight of powder after standard no. of tapping.
Tapped density = weight / tapped volume
Carr’s index may be defined as
Carr’s index = (Tapped density – bulk density / tapped density)× 100
Hausner’s ratio is the no. i.e co-related to flowability of the powder.
Hausner’s ratio = Tapped density / bulk density
Glidantefficeancy=Time of flow with glident/Time of flow with outglident.1-3
REQUIREMENTS
Chemical:
- Lactose.Talc,
- Starch,
- Mangesiumsterate.
Apparatus:
- Funnel,
- Burette stand,
- Stop watch.
PROCEDURE
Take the sample mixture containing Lactose and Glident. Then it was poured in to the funnel keeping the tip of the funnel closed. A white paper was placed below the funnel on a solid surface.
The distance between the tip and the solid surface kept nearly 5 cm. Now the tip of the funnel is opened so that a tip of the powder formed. Time of flow, height, radious of the hip was measured. By using the formula angle of repose and glident efficiency can be calculated.
tanθ =h/r
θ=tan-1h/r
Glidant efficeancy=Time of flow with glident/Time of flow with outglident.
