How to be a virologist?
To be a virologist, you need to complete your master’s degree in virology. Eligibility criteria are
- You must have completed 10+2 from a good university or college in India.
- You must have scored a minimum 55 -60 percent mark in the last examination.
- Make sure you have selected science subjects in the 11th and 12th standards.
- You should complete B.Sc degree with a science background such as microbiology, life science, biotechnology, MBBS, etc.
- Once you have completed a bachelor’s degree, go for a master’s degree in virology.
- To obtain the best career opportunities, you can select to do a Ph.D. in virology.
- You need to obtain a license to practice as a virologist in India. This you get by completing a minimum of 3-6 years of virology research.
Important skills required to be a perfect virologists
- Good communication skills: To make a successful career in virology, you are expected to work with several people at various research labs, public health sectors, hospitals, etc. So, you should have good communication skills for expressing your knowledge to others in a perfect manner.
- Analytical mind: You should plan and accurately interpret several experiments and their outcomes and conclude investigations.
- Strong immunity: As you will be dealing with viruses or some virus-infected samples, you should demonstrate strong immunity to infections.
- You should possess a calm mindset: You might be dealing with some of the apostate species of viruses that might undergo mutation and recombination, thereby leading to threats to human beings.
- You must have a good hand in molecular biology skills: You should excel in techniques such as cell culture, assay development, PCR, Handling other laboratory equipment and tools that consist of air samples or collectors.
